Did you know that Two Small Men has more than 35 locations across the country? Our team members love the communities they live and work in, and they’re always excited to share their favourite things with people moving there. We were inspired by this, and decided to start a new series on our blog called the City Spotlight. Once a month we’ll be highlighting one of the cities our movers are located in. This week’s city spotlight: living in Calgary!
Calgary is one of our moving company’s main locations. We have a large team there, and are proud to say we are involved with some great charities and organizations in the city. If you’re moving to Calgary, here are some things you’ll be interested in learning:
Calgary is a city located in the south of Alberta, just east of the Canadian Rockies and along the Bow and Elbow rivers. While it isn’t the provinces capital city, as of the 2016 census, Calgary was the largest city in Alberta (and the third-largest municipality in Canada) with a population of 1,239,220.
Fun Fact: Calgary was named after a hamlet on the Isle of Mull in Scotland.
When it comes to business, Calgary is the home of many head offices for major oil and gas companies, and is known as a leader in the industry. It has the second-highest concentration of head offices in Canada, behind only Toronto. Companies like Suncor, West Jet, Shaw Communications, and the Canadian Pacific Railway have their headquarters in Calgary.
Top Things to Do In Calgary
There are a variety of things to do in Calgary in many different disciplines. From Arts and Culture, to Nature, to Sports and Recreation, to Festivals, to Dining there’s something for everyone.
Of course, we can’t write about Calgary without mentioning the Stampede. The Calgary Stampede is known as “the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth” and features 10 full days (and nights) of entertainment. From the professional rodeo, to the midway, to the entertainment, to the food, the Stampede always has something going on.
Fun Fact: The Calgary Stampede’s record attendance was 1,409,371 during it’s centennial in 2012
The closeness of the city to the Rocky Mountains is a major draw for many people considering moving to Calgary. Only a short drive away from home and you can be experiencing the beauty of the mountains when hiking, biking, kayaking, skiing, and much more. With abundant wildlife and stunning landscapes, the mountains (visible from parts of the city) won’t disappoint no matter how many times you visit.
Calgary’s professional sports teams can provide both entertainment and camaraderie all throughout the year. There’s professional hockey, lacrosse, and football teams to cheer for.
Make sure to head to Tourism Calgary for more information on everything there is to do in the city. You might find something that surprises you.
