A piano might be the hardest thing you'll ever move. An upright runs 180 to 270 kg; a grand can top 500. It's heavy, there's nothing easy to grab onto, and the action inside is delicate enough that a bad angle or a hard bump can throw it off. Get it wrong and you're looking at a damaged instrument, gouged floors, or a wrecked back. It's not one to hand to general movers.

How we move it

It starts with a look — usually a quick call with a few photos, or an in-person visit if it's a tricky one — so we can size up the piano, measure your doors and stairs, and work out the route at both ends. On the day, the piano gets wrapped in quilted blankets and the keyboard lid taped shut. On a grand, the legs and pedals come off. We lay runners on your floors and pad the door frames, then the piano goes on the truck strapped tight to the wall so it can't budge on the drive. At the new place we set it exactly where you want it and put it back together.

One tip: don't rush to tune it. Give it two or three weeks to settle into the new room first — moving knocks any piano out of tune, and it needs time to adjust before a tuning will actually hold.

The tricky spots in Calgary

Calgary has a few quirks that make a piano move interesting, and our crews have run into all of them:

• Heritage homes in Kensington, Hillhurst, and Inglewood. The staircases are narrow and a hundred years old, and they tend to turn right where you don't want them to. We measure every doorway and landing ahead of time so nothing's a surprise on the day.

• Bridgeland's hills. A few of those streets are steep enough — around 14.5% — to change how we park the truck and keep the piano steady.

• Winter. Cold and the Chinook swings are hard on a piano, so we blanket it and keep it out of the cold as much as we can. Once it's inside, keep it off the exterior walls and away from the vents.
