Moves can be tricky at the best of times, but moving as a senior citizen is almost always challenging. Along with logistical issues, there's also the emotional and sentimental factors to consider. Leaving the home where you raised your family and spent most of your life is a lot to ask of anyone. Our Calgary Movers are sensitive to this reality and go out of their way to be patient and to tale their time with elderly clients and their possessions, especially in cases of downsizing or moving to retirement homes.
Moving seniors requires much more than heavy lifting. Here's what we offer:
Downsizing — we'll go through the house room by room at your pace and help you figure out what can go and what needs to stay. If you're ok with it, we can bring the rest to a local charity.
Packing and unpacking — we can properly pack and label everything and then get it unpacked and placed at the new residence so that the space already feels like a lived-in home when you get there.
Furniture and heirlooms — we'll take apart beds and cabinets for the move and put them back together after, with extra care for the antiques and items that can't be replaced.
Retirement community move-ins — many Calgary residences have their own rules when it comes to moving in rules, and we can work all that out with the building ahead of time.
Rearranging what you've got — if you just need to rearrange furniture or other heavy items to make it easier to get around a room, we can do that too.
The kind senior move we deal with the most usually involves a downsizing from a big multi-room hose to a much smaller condo or retirement residence. It can be a difficult experience, but the reality is that the senior in question usually needs to get rid of about half their possessions. Figuring out what goes and what stays requires time and patience. We can take care of the downsizing, the rules of the new residence thanks to out experienced movers and our handy condo checklist. And if there's items you don't know what to do with, we can arrange to put them in storage until you figure it out.
Like any other local move, a senior move is priced based on home size and crew. A one-bedroom typically runs $550 to $1,100, a two-bedroom $1,000 to $1,400, and a three-bedroom $1,200 to $1,800. Extras such as packing, downsizing help, and specialty items are quoted on top. As always, summer moves cost more while moving in October comes with the most value. It's also often cheaper to move on a week day than the weekend.
You'll probably need more time to plan and organize a senior move. Assume you'll need at least three or four weeks and up to six if it's happening in the summer. It's much better to plan what's going and what's staying several weeks before the move than on the big day itself. It makes it easier on the movers who can then work at a pace that's good for everyone, including family members or caregivers who are welcome to be present while the move is happening. In Calgary, we can start as early as 7 a.m. so calmly kicking off the day in the mid morning is not an issue.

Common questions about moving services for seniors in calgary in Calgary
It's priced the same as any local move, mostly on home size. A one-bedroom usually runs $550 to $1,100, a two-bedroom $1,000 to $1,400, and a three-bedroom $1,200 to $1,800. Packing and downsizing help are quoted on top. Summer's the pricier season, and October's the best value. A midweek day is often easier to book, and a little cheaper too. Our full Calgary pricing guide breaks it down by size and month.
Yes — and honestly it's the part that takes the most out of people. We go through the house room by room and help sort what to keep from what to pass on, working at your pace and going gently with the sentimental things. When you're ready to part with something, we can line up drop-offs with local Calgary charities so it goes somewhere good. Our downsizing guide walks through the whole process, and the Calgary decluttering guide says exactly where to take things.
Yes, all the time — into residences and assisted-living communities all over the city, places like Brentwood, Tuscany, and Signal Hill. A lot of these buildings have their own move-in rules: an elevator to book, a loading dock schedule, insurance paperwork, set hours you're allowed to move. We sort all of it out with the building beforehand and turn up with the documents and gear in hand, elevator pads included.
Three or four weeks ahead is usually enough, or five to six in the summer when things get busy. The bigger thing is to start sorting early — four to six weeks out — so the downsizing decisions aren't rushed. If the move's into a condo or a retirement residence, remember the building's freight elevator often needs booking about five business days ahead. Our best and worst times to move guide has the month-by-month picture.
Yes, and we take it seriously. We build in extra time so nothing feels rushed, and we work around walkers, wheelchairs, and medical equipment, keeping the pathways clear the whole way. If a family member or caregiver wants to be there, all the better — we'll fit the timing around them. We also make a point of getting the day-to-day things — grab bars, a shower bench, that sort of equipment — set up and usable at the new place before anything else.
Absolutely — a senior move doesn't always mean a new address. We'll shift the heavy stuff around your current place to make it easier to get around: widening a path for a walker, say, or moving a dresser somewhere it makes more sense. Same crews and the same care as a full move. Request a free quote and tell us what needs moving.
