Two Small Men Staff Spotlight: How Jason Mathie Drives Growth and Innovation in Calgary

Careers

Jason Mathie brings fresh ideas, steady leadership, and a drive to help Two Small Men with Big Hearts become one of Western Canada’s most trusted moving companies.

After more than two decades in the rental car industry, Jason Mathie brought his business sense, adaptability, and drive for growth to Two Small Men with Big Hearts. Since May 2022, he has been serving as Operations Manager in Calgary, working closely with Director of Operations Andrew Giguere to support 13 branches across Western Canada.

“I’m the Operations Manager in Calgary,” Jason explains. “I work under Andrew, who’s the Director of Operations, and I help manage all of our branch managers.” His career path to this point has been both steady and surprising. Before joining Two Small Men, Jason spent nearly 20 years working for National Car Rental and later Enterprise. He started in the Vancouver area, spent time in Whitehorse, and eventually settled in Calgary in 2001.

The turning point came during the pandemic. “COVID really changed things for me,” he recalls. “The travel and hospitality industries were hit hard, and rental cars were part of that. It forced me to make a change, and that’s how I ended up here.” That career pivot brought him into the moving industry, where professional movers in Calgary and across Alberta face both seasonal challenges and opportunities for growth.

Jason believes that his background in travel and hospitality gave him an edge when transitioning into moving. “Enterprise is highly successful at what they do, and I learned a lot about running seasonal operations from them. That experience translates well to moving, where we also adapt our business to the different seasons. A lot of moving companies do things the same way because that’s how it’s always been done. But I don’t think it has to be. We can apply ideas like dynamic pricing or new revenue streams the same way hospitality and travel industries do.”

His role at Two Small Men changes with the seasons. During the busy summer months he spends most of his time triaging situations across the 13 branches in Western Canada, from crew shortages, to truck breakdowns, to customer issues. “It’s about supporting branch managers so they can focus on the jobs at hand,” he says. In the off-season the focus is different, shifting more into planning and strategy.

Jason works on projects like the launch of the company’s Smart Moving software, setting up goals and bonus structures for branch managers, and supporting movers through the performance raise program. He puts a lot of his time into conversations with people throughout the organization. “A lot of what I do is meeting with people, talking to branch managers, and steering them toward success.”

Even before he joined the company, Jason was familiar with the Two Small Men brand, though he had never personally hired professional movers in Calgary or elsewhere. That changed when his aunt moved from Mississauga to the Lower Mainland and hired Two Small Men to handle the job. “It was a good experience overall, and it gave me perspective from the customer side,” he says.

Jason has a strong appreciation for the charitable work that Two Small Men does in communities across Alberta and British Columbia. While his focus is on operations and the financial health of the business, he sees the value of community partnerships both for the people they help and for the teams who do the work. “I appreciate the community partnerships because they keep our movers busy when paid work isn’t always available. Donating a move helps people in need, but it also gives our team valuable work. That’s a win-win.”

Looking ahead, Jason is excited about growth and raising service levels in the Canadian moving industry. “My goal is always to continue raising our service levels. The van lines often have a better reputation for service, and I’d like us to move into that space by retaining and rewarding the best people, and building a stronger team from our branch managers to our frontline staff.” Expansion is also something that motivates him. “Since I started, we’ve added four owned locations, growing from nine to 13. Calgary, for example, could go from seven or eight trucks to 12 or even 15. That kind of growth drives me. At the end of the day, I want us to win in this industry the way Enterprise wins in theirs.”

With leaders like Jason Mathie steering the operational side of the business, Two Small Men with Big Hearts continues to grow as one of the most trusted moving companies in Calgary and across Western Canada.
