Local moving in a city like Lethbridge is rarely just about boxes and furniture. It’s about people, often people who have lived in the same place for years, sometimes decades, and who need more than just strong backs to help them through a transition. For Mayank Parmar, a mover with Two Small Men with Big Hearts, that reality is especially clear when it comes to senior moves.

Park in Lethbridge, Alberta

Mayank has been living in Lethbridge for about a year and a half, and in that time he’s seen a wide range of local moves, including helping older adults downsize, relocate, or settle into a new home. While he doesn’t describe these moves as dramatically different in terms of items, he’s clear that the approach matters.

“When I do a job for seniors,” Mayank says, “most of the time I try to keep asking them, like, do you need any other help?” He explains that seniors often need more reassurance and flexibility. “Do you need us to do something else for you too? Like, do you want to move up something else? You want to organize anything, just ask us. We’ll do it for you because it’s hard for them to move stuff around.”

That mindset reflects the values behind Two Small Men with Big Hearts, especially on local moves where relationships matter just as much as logistics.

One challenging situation Mayank remembers wasn’t about heavy furniture or narrow staircases, but about stress and expectations. In one case, a senior client had booked a move at a certain rate, but when the crew arrived, there was confusion about the final cost.

“It happened one time,” Mayank recalls. “They booked some amount and when we went for a move, the guy was like, ‘I will only pay this much. I won’t be able to go with the bill.’”

Rather than escalating the situation, Mayank says the team paused and involved their manager. “So that was a kind of steady situation,” he explains. “We had to talk with our manager, and then we agreed on some price. We give them some discount, and then we just did the job right.”

For seniors in particular, that kind of flexibility can make a stressful day manageable. It’s not just about completing the move, it’s about making sure the person feels respected and supported.

When asked what kinds of items seniors typically need help moving, Mayank keeps it simple. “Nothing special,” he says. “It’s just about, like, their beds and all.” Often, those beds are newer, even when the person moving is older. “Sometimes they have it’s like brand new when they are moving to different place, so we have to assemble everything.”

Assembly and setup are small details, but for seniors, they make a big difference. A bed that’s properly put together on moving day can mean comfort, safety, and peace of mind from the very first night.

Mayank’s patience and adaptability are shaped in part by his own journey. Originally from India, he moved first to Vancouver before settling in Lethbridge. The adjustment, especially to the climate, was significant.

“In my country,” Mayank says, “in summer, it goes to like 45, 40 degrees.” Winters are mild by comparison. “In winters, maximum it goes is like 10 or 15 degrees, not more than that.”

Vancouver was an easier transition. “In Vancouver, also, it wasn’t that bad,” he explains. “In winters… maximum it goes is like minus two or three.” Lethbridge, however, was different. “When I moved to Lethbridge, it’s a completely different story.”

Surviving a Southern Alberta winter took some learning. “Before buying a car, I had to figure out a lot of things,” Mayank says. “Like, to wear my gloves. Get better shoes.” Once he had a vehicle, things became more manageable. “When I had my car, it wasn’t that difficult after that.”

Those experiences help Mayank relate to clients who are also dealing with big life transitions, whether that’s moving to a smaller home, adapting to new physical limits, or simply letting go of a space filled with memories.

Asked whether he prefers summer or winter moves, Mayank doesn’t hesitate. “Yeah, for sure,” he says, choosing summer. But regardless of the season, his approach to senior and local moving stays the same, slow down, communicate clearly, and offer help beyond what’s strictly required.

In a city like Lethbridge, where local moves often involve neighbours helping neighbours, that attitude matters. Senior moving isn’t about rushing through a checklist. It’s about listening, adjusting, and treating every move as personal. For Mayank Parmar and Two Small Men with Big Hearts, that care is part of the job, every time.
