Moving long distance in Southern Alberta is never just about distance on a map. It’s about wind that can push a truck sideways, snow that piles up overnight, and long, straight highways that stretch between open fields and big prairie skies. For Mayank Parmar, a mover with Two Small Men with Big Hearts, these realities are part of everyday work, especially when moving families and businesses between Lethbridge, Calgary, and the wide-open corridor that connects them.
One of Mayank’s most vivid memories comes from a winter move involving a piano, one of the heaviest, most delicate items a mover can handle. The weather that day was deceptively calm.
“The weather was… it wasn’t windy or anything like that, which is like common here,” Mayank recalls. “But there was a lot of snow around.”
It had snowed the night before, leaving “a couple of inches of snow,” and while the lack of wind was a relief, the cold still set the tone for the day. “It was cold, basically. There was no wind, so that was a good part, but it was cold and there was a lot of snow around.”
In Southern Alberta, that combination matters. Lethbridge is famously windy, and locals know that snow without wind is often the best-case scenario. As Mayank puts it simply, “Lethbridge is like, it’s super windy.”
And when wind and snow arrive together? “Nobody wants to work in that time,” he says with a laugh, but the work still needs to be done.

Wind isn’t just uncomfortable; it changes how movers handle furniture. Large, flat items like sofas, frames, and tables can behave like sails.
“Sofas or like frames… counter tables,” Mayank explains. “We have to take it horizontally, right?”
On a calm day, that’s manageable. On a windy one, it becomes a puzzle. “When it’s windy, we have to figure it out. We can do it vertically or maybe more than two people, just to keep it stable.”
This adaptability is part of what defines professional moving in places like Lethbridge. It’s not just muscle,it’s judgment, teamwork, and knowing when conditions demand extra hands or a different approach.
Long distance moving often means heading north to Calgary, a route Mayank knows well. “To Calgary sometimes, it’s around like 200 kilometers,” he says. “So I have been to that kind of moves before.”
Under ideal conditions, the drive is straightforward. “It typically takes like one and a half hour,” Mayank explains. But a fully loaded moving truck changes the equation. “When the truck is full, I take around like two hours. I prefer to drive like a little bit slower.”
That slower pace isn’t hesitation, it’s professionalism. Long distance moving is as much about safe driving as careful loading.
Interestingly, Mayank notes that long distance moves can sometimes be simpler inside the truck. “Whenever they do long moves, they just get rid of a lot of stuff,” he says. “They just want to take the minimum as much as possible.” Less clutter often means safer packing and smoother unloading at the other end.
When asked how he protects customers’ belongings during long hauls, Mayank is refreshingly straightforward. “Nothing special,” he says. “Just usual things.”
Those “usual things” reflect experience rather than shortcuts, preparation, awareness, and taking care of the crew as well as the cargo. “I always try to say them to carry water bottles… just to stay hydrated,” he notes. Proper gear matters too: “I have some good gloves and non-slipping shoes.”
In long distance moving, small habits add up to safer days.
The stretch between Lethbridge and Calgary is known for its openness, and in winter, that openness can be unforgiving. Traffic is usually light, which helps, but wind remains the biggest concern.
“It’s not that difficult,” Mayank says of the drive. “It’s only because sometimes when it’s super windy…”
He shares a story that underscores why caution matters. A previous manager was involved in an accident while driving back from Calgary with an empty truck. “The wind was super windy, so the truck wasn’t stable,” Mayank explains. The truck didn’t tip, but “they managed to save it somehow.”
That experience informs Mayank’s approach today. “When I don’t feel safe, I just prefer to stop somewhere,” he says. “At a gas station or somewhere like that, it’s better than getting into an accident.”
For those unfamiliar with the region, the drive might sound monotonous, but it has its own prairie character. There are no dense forests or winding mountain roads here.
“It’s not like that,” Mayank says. “Just like… long, long fields.”
Straight roads. Big skies. Open land. It’s a geography that demands focus and patience, especially when hauling someone’s entire life behind you.
While Calgary is currently the longest route Mayank handles regularly with Two Small Men with Big Hearts, his experience goes much farther. In a previous job based in Vancouver, he made significantly longer trips.

“From Vancouver… Calgary is around like a thousand kilometers,” he says. “I have been on those kind of trips like four or five times.”
That background gives him confidence. Asked if he’d be ready for longer long-distance moves in the future, his answer is immediate: “Yep, I’m ready for that.”
Long distance moving in Alberta isn’t glamorous. It’s cold mornings, sudden wind, careful driving, and steady hands on heavy items. But for movers like Mayank Parmar, it’s also about responsibility, knowing when to slow down, when to stop, and how to adapt to a landscape that doesn’t compromise.
Between Lethbridge’s relentless wind, Calgary’s growing skyline, and the wide-open stretch in between, every move tells a story. And with Two Small Men with Big Hearts, those stories are built on care, experience, and the quiet confidence of people who know the road, and respect it.
