Mayank Parmar Stopped Worrying and Embraced Canadian Winter

Lethbridge may not seem like the most complicated place in the world. But when you're moving in Lethbridge, you'll begin to discover subtleties and nuances that set this city apart from others. There are people and families who have lived here for generations and when they move, they require more than just physical support as they transition from one home to another. This is a situation that Two Small Men mover Mayank Parmar sees expecially when it comes to helping seniors with their moves.

Although Mayank has only lived in Lethbridge for about a year and a half, he's already experienced almost every kind of move you can imagine. He says that senior moves are more common place than you'd imagine and that he's helped plenty relocate, downsize or settle into a new condo. The contents of these moves themselves may be similar but he says he tries to personalize his approach as each relocation tends to be unique in its own way.

“When I do a job for seniors,” Mayank says, “most of the time I try to keep asking them, like, do you need any other help?”

From his experience, he's noticed that extra flexibility is important when it comes to working with seniors.

“Do you need us to do something else for you too? Like, do you want to move something special? You want to organize anything, just ask us. We’ll do it for you because it’s hard for them to move stuff around.”

This is a belief and attitude held not only by Mayank but by Two Small Men as an organization. These core values are especially important when it comes to local moving where a solid relationship with your movers can be just as important as working out actual logistics.

Mayank recalls one scenario in particular where the moving stress didn't come from heavy boxes or tight staircase, but from the overwhelming anxiety of the client. And when there's disputes about the quotes rated on top of everything else, it's a sticky situation for any mover to find themselves in.

“It happened one time,” Mayank recalls. “They booked some amount and when we went for a move, the guy was like, ‘I will only pay this much. I won’t be able to go with the bill.’”

Instead of making things worse, Mayank and co. took the time to confer with their manager.

“So that was a kind of steady situation,” he explains. “We had to talk with our manager, and then we agreed on some price. We give them some discount, and then we just did the job right.”

When a senior sees this kind of flexibility in action, it can make thier moving day a whole lot easier to swallow. It makes them feel supported and respected.

He says there are few actual surprises when it comes to the contents of senior moves.

“Nothing special,” he says. “It’s just about, like, their beds and all.” These beds often tend to be fresh from the store. “Sometimes they have like brand new beds when they are moving to different place, so we have to assemble everything.”

Knowing that you don't have to take the time to assemble new furniture is a big deal for seniors. Getting to your new home and having a new comfortable bed that's been professionally assembled can offer a good measure of peace of mind.

Mayank knows all too well the importance of adaptability and patience as it pretains to his own story of arriving in Canada. After emigrating from India, he moved to Vancouver before heading to Lethbridge. He himself needed to adapt and adjust, especially when it came to the weather.

“In my country,” Mayank says, “in summer, it goes to like 45, 40 degrees.” Winters are mild by comparison. “In winters, maximum it goes is like 10 or 15 degrees, not more than that.”

Vancouver wasn't the biggest shock to the system.

“In Vancouver, also, it wasn’t that bad,” he explains. “In winters… maximum it goes is like minus two or three.” Lethbridge, however, was different. “When I moved to Lethbridge, it’s a completely different story.”

It took some getting-used-to when it came to making it through a move in Southern Alberta in the winter.

“Before buying a car, I had to figure out a lot of things,” Mayank says. “Like, to wear my gloves. Get better shoes. When I had my car, it wasn’t that difficult after that.”

It was these experiences, however, that helped Mayank relate to the people of the area and their various moving needs, whether it's dealing with physical limitations, downsizing to a much smaller living situation, or just moving on from a space filled with decades of memories.

To this day, Mayank prefers summer moves over winter moves, but no matter the seson, he always takes the same approach to local senior relocations. He slows down, makes sure everything is communicated clearly and he offers the help that is needed.
