About Your Edmonton to Toronto Move

The Edmonton to Toronto route spans approximately 3,480 km across the Trans-Canada Highway, making it one of Canada's major cross-country moving corridors. This journey takes you through the wide-open Prairies of Alberta and Saskatchewan, across Manitoba, and through the rugged beauty of Northern Ontario before arriving in Canada's largest city.

Many Edmontonians make this move for Toronto's diverse job market, world-class entertainment, and multicultural lifestyle. The city offers unparalleled access to industries like finance, tech, media, and arts. Be prepared for a significant cost of living increase—Toronto is roughly 20-26% more expensive than Edmonton, with housing being the biggest difference.

The route through Northern Ontario requires careful planning. Between Kenora and Sudbury, services are limited and cell coverage can be spotty. Winter moves are possible but may face delays due to weather conditions on Highway 17.

Your belongings will travel approximately 3,480 km from Edmonton, Alberta to Toronto, Ontario.

Leaving Edmonton

What to Know When Leaving Edmonton

When leaving Edmonton, you'll need to close your Alberta accounts and prepare for Ontario's different systems. Cancel EPCOR electricity (310-4300) and ATCO Gas (780-420-5585). Contact your insurance provider to transfer your auto policy—Ontario insurance rates are typically higher than Alberta's.

Keep your Alberta driver's licence and health card for now—you'll exchange them in Ontario within 60-90 days of arrival. If you're moving in winter, consider the timing carefully. The Northern Ontario section of this route can experience severe weather and occasional highway closures.

Spring and fall moves are ideal for this route, avoiding both winter road conditions and summer's peak moving season prices. Start decluttering early—with Toronto's smaller living spaces and higher storage costs, bringing less is often smarter.

Arriving in Toronto

Your Guide to Toronto

Welcome to Toronto! You're joining Canada's largest and most diverse city. Popular neighbourhoods for newcomers include The Annex for walkability and character, North York for family-friendly suburbs with good transit, Liberty Village for young professionals, and Scarborough for more affordable options with diverse communities.

Register for OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) within 90 days of becoming a resident. Exchange your Alberta driver's licence at a ServiceOntario location—it transfers directly without testing. You'll need to register your vehicle and obtain Ontario plates within 30 days.

Prepare for sticker shock on housing. Toronto rent averages $2,360+ for a one-bedroom compared to Edmonton's $1,350. The TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) offers extensive subway, streetcar, and bus service—many Torontonians go car-free. A monthly transit pass is around $156.

The climate adjustment is easier than you might think. Toronto winters are milder (averaging -4°C in January vs Edmonton's -10°C) but wetter and slushier. Summers are warm but more humid than Edmonton's dry heat.

Lourik (or Laurik), Kevin, Corbin, Brad and Mark came and rocked the move out of the park. Took great care of the items, as well as the floors/walls. We had some challenging items to move (eg. Elliptical) and they did a fantastic job with all of it. Based on the estimation of the move (time vs inventory), they came in well under as they were fantastically efficient. 10/10 would use again.
