Staff spotlight on Kate Hall
Two Small Men with Big Hearts can be a fun place to work. For move coordinator Kate Hall, the fun started before she even landed the gig almost four years ago.
"There was a job posting on Indeed,” says the Calgary native. “I had come off maternity leave early for another job that was supposed to be work-from-home. I took the job. It was not work-from-home. I found Two Small Men and then I had an interview and we all laughed a lot for a very long time, and then I got a job.”
For the mom of the three, however, remote working is more than just a job perk.
"It really helps with everything else you've got to do with the kids and everything. It makes it a little bit easier. And then at least like if they're home and sick, I don't have to miss a day of work because they can sit on their iPads and do whatever crazy stuff they want to do.”
Regardless of her work location, Hall gets a lot done. As a move coordinator, she wears many hats and gets to deal with all kinds of different people.
”It's very busy,” she says. “I work a lot on the phones, obviously, and pull leads from the board based on quotes that people have requested online through the app or through our website there. I work on other estimates for a couple of other partners that we have. I also call the customers and establish a rapport with them if they're open to it. Then I just kind of get to know them a little bit and figure out how to get the information that I need in order to get them the moving information as quickly and efficiently as I can.
“I've worked in a lot of different environments, and it's honestly been my favorite. Between the people that you deal with on the phone and the people you work with, they're just, for the majority, fantastic. You get a different customer every single time, so it keeps it interesting.”
The customers themselves come from all walks of life and represent nearly every demographic imaginable, but Hall says there's a certain group of callers whom she especially cares for.
”I like working with the little old ladies who haven't moved in 20 plus years. It's big and scary for them. A lot of those moves are my favorite because some of them take you in like you're their granddaughter and you become their favorite person of all time. You get a good relationship.”
It's this focus on maintaining positive and pleasant relationships with customers that Hall says is what ultimately sets Two Small Men apart from the competition.
“Overall, I think our demeanor is a big, huge part of it. A lot of people that call in comment on how other companies are when they answer the phone or how they give their estimates or how they talk to you. And it's more of a ‘Here's your estimate, get off my line,’ kind of thing.
“I think for the most part, a lot of us take that extra time and make it more personable. So you're not just feeling like you're just a number and I'm trying to get you in and out as fast as I can.”
Over the years, Hall has also gotten to work closely with some of Two Small Men's community partners, which she says is one of the most rewarding parts of the job on both a professional and personal level.
“We did a donated move for PALS Autism Society in Vancouver. My two oldest boys are autistic, so it's near and dear to my heart to make sure that we're helping the community for autism where they need it, because that's one that is kind of lacking in a lot of components. So it was nice that we were able to help them so they could keep the money within the program.”
Hall loves working for Two Small Men so much that she's never shied away from suggesting it as a place of employment to friends and family members.
“I have recommended it and we've had a few people hired,” she says. “And I would recommend working for Two Small Men all the time because I do really love them in all aspects.”
And although she's never used the moving services of Two Small Men herself, she says she absolutely would in the future, especially after experiencing a less-than-stellar move with another company.
“When we moved to our house, I used a moving company and it was the worst experience of my life. We ended up having to do all of the move ourselves as well with the people we hired. That doesn't happen here. You don't have to assist in your own move here.”
At the end of the day, Hall says it's hard not feeling proud about working for this great company.
”I promote them all the time at my husband's work functions,” she says. “I'm definitely there saying things like, 'You need a mover. You should use Two Small Men.’”
