There are two things about moving that will always be true: moving is stressful, and moving is expensive. Whether you pay for your move by hiring a professional moving company or by using hours upon hours of your own time and labour, moving is no small feat for any family.
If your upcoming move has space for you to budget for professional movers, keep reading for our best tips on saving money when you move!
Choose your moving date strategically
Some moving companies offer hourly rates for local moves that will vary depending on the date of your move. Two Small Men with Big Hearts is one such company, and our Move Coordinators are here to help you find the most cost-effective day to move! But how do you know when that is?
Most moving companies are busiest on weekends and at the end of the month, and the moving industry is no different from other services when it comes to the costs associated with supply and demand. It follows that if you can move on a weekday in the middle of the month when business is a bit slower, you’ll likely be offered a lower rate than the last Saturday of the month. When you’re calling in for your quote, be sure to let your Move Coordinator know what your plan is and if you have any flexibility so that they can help recommend the best time to move.
At Two Small Men, for example, you can save up to $30 per hour on your move by moving mid-month!
But I have to move at the end of the month! Can I still save?
We hear you! Sometimes there’s no flexibility when it comes to your moving date, whether your lease has ended, or new owners are moving in. Don’t worry, you can still make cash-saving preparations leading up to moving day that can save you a lot of time, and therefore, a lot of money. Here’s what you can do to save:
Downsize
The less stuff you have to move, the faster your movers will be able to load and unload the truck. Moving to a new house is as good a time as any to unburden yourself from old items that are no longer serving you!
Be Prepared and Organized
Plan in advance for your move: label your boxes with the rooms they should go in, disassemble your beds, and make sure no loose items need to be moved by your moving company. You can even move boxes as close to the entrance your movers will be using as possible. Keep in mind that Two Small Men offers full packing and disassembly services if you’d rather save yourself some time and effort, and it works for your budget!
Check the Access
Your moving company will probably be using a five-ton truck, or in some cases they may use a three-ton. In either case, it’s clear that the vehicle used will be a lot bulkier than your car. Check on what the parking access is like at your current home and new home; and if you’re moving into an apartment complex, check on what the rules are with your property manager.
For apartment moves, you will likely have to book an elevator in advance, too!
