They call retirement a new chapter in life and, as exciting as that can be, it can also be a source of anxiety for seniors, especially when it comes to moving away from a home that's felt familiar for decades. Helping seniors relocate is an emotional balancing act for the movers.

“It’s tough for seniors to let go of things,” says Two Small Men mover Kerry Wallace, one of our experienced movers. “They’ve lived in a house for 50 years, and every piece has a story. You’re helping them decide what stays and what goes, while their kids are trying to manage the limited space in the new apartment.”

Downsizing, after all, doesn't just mean getting rid of a few nicknacks. It's getting used to a whole new way of living.

“Sometimes you find yourself mediating a little,” Kerry explains. “The kids are telling their parents they can’t keep everything, and the parents are holding onto memories. We try to help, making sure there’s space for the items that really matter. Personally, the customer is the parent. If they want a special item moved, we make it happen.”

“When they move into a seniors’ complex, there’s more than just a place to live,” Kerry says. “They have movie theaters, salons, swimming pools, bus outings, and social activities with other seniors. One move that stands out saw an elderly Kelowna couple leaving their old family home behind for a new downtown apartment. The movers took care to carefully pack everything while making sure the couple themselves maintained agency throughout the process.

“We just try to hear their voice,” Kerry notes.

The actual houses in Kelowna present a different challenge all together. The vintage constructions weren't made with modern furniture in mind and so getting large pieces in and out of these old ornate homes can be tricky.

“The physical part is manageable,” Kerry says. “The harder part is helping everyone stay calm, especially when emotions run high.”

At the end of the day, Kerry says that seeing relief replace worry on the faces of the elderly clients makes the whole thing worth it.

“It’s always satisfying to see seniors settle in and enjoy their new home,” Kerry reflects. “They feel more independent and connected, and that’s a great reward for us.”

And that in and of itself incapsulates the Two Small Men mission.
