About Your Toronto to Edmonton Move

The Toronto to Edmonton move is becoming increasingly popular as Ontarians seek Alberta's affordable housing and growing economy. This 3,480 km journey follows the Trans-Canada Highway through Northern Ontario's lake country, across the Prairies, and into Alberta's capital city.

The financial benefits are substantial. Edmonton's cost of living is 20-26% lower than Toronto's, with the biggest savings in housing. The average Toronto condo price can buy a detached house in Edmonton. Monthly rent savings alone can exceed $1,000—that's $12,000+ per year back in your pocket.

Edmonton offers a strong job market, particularly in energy, technology, healthcare, and government sectors. The city is experiencing significant growth, with interprovincial migration at 20-year highs. You'll enjoy more space, lower taxes (no PST in Alberta), and access to the Rocky Mountains just a few hours west.

Your belongings will travel approximately 3,480 km from Toronto, Ontario to Edmonton, Alberta.

Leaving Toronto

What to Know When Leaving Toronto

When leaving Toronto, you'll need to close your Ontario accounts and cancel services. Contact Toronto Hydro or your local utility provider, Enbridge for gas, and notify ServiceOntario of your move. Keep your OHIP card—coverage continues for 90 days while you transition to Alberta Health.

If you're selling a Toronto property, the equity can go significantly further in Edmonton's housing market. Many Torontonians upgrade from a condo to a full house with a yard and garage. Consider selling furniture that won't fit your new, potentially larger space—or better yet, keep it!

For condo moves, book the elevator at least two weeks in advance. Street parking permits for moving trucks are available through the City of Toronto. Moving during weekdays can help avoid traffic congestion in the GTA.

Arriving in Edmonton

Your Guide to Edmonton

Welcome to Edmonton! You'll immediately notice how much further your money goes. Popular neighbourhoods include Strathcona and Old Strathcona for urban walkability and arts, Windermere and Summerside for new family-friendly suburbs, The Glenora area for established character homes, and Oliver/Downtown for urban convenience.

Set up utilities through EPCOR for electricity and water (310-4300) and ATCO Gas (780-420-5585). Unlike Ontario's bundled services, Alberta separates electricity and gas providers. Register for Alberta Health Care Insurance—there's a three-month waiting period, so keep your OHIP active until coverage begins.

Exchange your Ontario driver's licence at any Alberta Registry Agent within 90 days—it transfers directly without testing. You'll enjoy lower auto insurance rates than Toronto. Register your vehicle and obtain Alberta plates at the same registry appointment.

Prepare for the climate change—Edmonton winters are colder (-10°C to -15°C average) but sunnier and drier than Toronto's. Invest in a good winter coat, block heater for your car, and embrace winter activities. The trade-off? Crisp, sunny winter days and spectacular summers with long daylight hours.

Lourik (or Laurik), Kevin, Corbin, Brad and Mark came and rocked the move out of the park. Took great care of the items, as well as the floors/walls. We had some challenging items to move (eg. Elliptical) and they did a fantastic job with all of it. Based on the estimation of the move (time vs inventory), they came in well under as they were fantastically efficient. 10/10 would use again.
