Vancouver Moving Rules & Bylaws

Everything you need to know about noise hours, parking permits, strata rules, and building requirements before your move.

Noise Hours (Noise Control Bylaw 6555)

AreaWeekdaysWeekends & Holidays
Outside Downtown7:00 AM – 8:00 PM10:00 AM – 8:00 PM
Downtown6:00 AM – 12:00 AM10:00 AM – 12:00 AM

Moving outside these hours risks a noise complaint and fine. Downtown gets extended hours but weekend starts remain 10 AM.

Street Parking for Moving Trucks

  • Temporary Street Occupancy Permit — reserve curb space or metered spots for your moving truck. $45 admin fee + daily meter rate + $50 refundable deposit per meter
  • Residents moving in/out do not need to provide insurance for the permit — businesses do
  • Apply through the City of Vancouver permit portal with at least 5 business days notice
  • Active loading/unloading is generally tolerated without a permit, but the truck must be actively in use
  • Residential parking permit (RPP) zones are enforced — check your street before relying on free parking

Bridge Restriction: Lions Gate Bridge — 13-tonne weight limit

A fully loaded 5-ton moving truck can weigh 10–14 tonnes. The Lions Gate Bridge prohibits vehicles over 13 tonnes — this means loaded moving trucks heading to the North Shore must use the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge (Second Narrows) instead. Also note the George Massey Tunnel has a 4.15 m height limit. Trucks over 11,800 kg must use designated truck routes (max height 4.12 m); non-truck-route streets have a 3.81 m clearance limit.

Condo & Strata Moving Checklist

With 26.9% of Vancouver moves being 1-bedroom apartments, condo logistics are a fact of life here. Most buildings — especially downtown, Yaletown, Coal Harbour, and newer towers in Mount Pleasant — require these steps. For the full breakdown including BC Strata Property Act requirements, see our complete condo moving rules guide.

Book the service elevator

Minimum 2 weeks ahead. Peak months (June–August) require earlier. Typical slots: 4 hours.

Get a Certificate of Insurance (COI)

Your mover provides this, naming the strata corporation as additionally insured. Concierge will deny entry without it.

Pay the damage deposit

Typically $200–$500 refundable. Some buildings also charge a non-refundable move-in/out fee.

Confirm loading dock clearance

Parkade entrances vary from 2.1 m to 3.0 m — arriving with too tall a truck means being turned away.

Check move-in hours

Many strata buildings restrict moves to weekdays 9 AM – 5 PM. Weekend moves may require special approval.

Take photos of common areas

Document hallways, elevator, and lobby before and after to protect your damage deposit.

Setting Up Utilities

Moving to BC? You'll need to set up BC Hydro (electricity, ~$13.50 connection fee), FortisBC (natural gas, ~$15 setup), register your vehicle with ICBC within 30 days, and enroll in MSP (no premiums, but 3-month wait period for new residents). See our full guide: Setting Up Utilities After Moving to BC. Looking for a place? Our rental market guide covers average rents, neighbourhood comparisons, and application tips.
