Edmonton Neighbourhood Moving Guide

Not all Edmonton moves are created equal. Difficulty varies wildly by neighbourhood — here is what our crews deal with.

Downtown / Oliver

High

High-rise condos, mid-rise apartments, some heritage homes

  • Freight elevator booking required — reserve at least 2 weeks ahead for a 2–4 hour window
  • Many buildings require a damage deposit and proof of insurance (COI) from the mover
  • One-way streets, bus lanes, and bike paths make truck positioning difficult
  • Long carry distances from loading zone to unit — budget extra time

Old Strathcona / Whyte Ave

Mod–High

Walk-up apartments (3–4 storey), character homes, newer infill

  • Walk-ups mean stair carries but no elevator booking hassles
  • Narrow alleys behind buildings — check truck access before moving day
  • Avoid festival weekends (especially Fringe in August) — the area is nearly impossible to navigate
  • Street parking on Whyte Ave is heavily contested

Garneau / McKernan (University)

Mod–High

Heritage homes (many subdivided), walk-up apartments, student housing

  • Converted heritage homes have narrow staircases and doorways not built for modern furniture
  • September is chaos — 40,000+ students return to the U of A area
  • Street parking competition is intense; mature trees line narrow streets
  • Mid-week moves strongly recommended for this area

Mill Woods

Low–Mod

Single-family homes (50%), row housing (25%), apartments

  • Curvilinear street layout with cul-de-sacs — GPS is essential, it is easy to get lost
  • Cul-de-sac turnarounds can be tight for large trucks
  • Once you find the address, moves are typically straightforward suburban
  • Excellent highway access via Whitemud Drive and Anthony Henday

Bonnie Doon / Holyrood

Low–Mod

1950s bungalows, two-storey homes, newer infill

  • Grid street pattern with back alleys — good for truck access
  • Older homes have narrow basement stairs and smaller doorways
  • Some original homes have detached garages in the back lane
  • Post-war basements often have low ceilings — measure large items first

Riverbend / Terwillegar

Low–Mod

1970s–90s two-storey homes, newer contemporary construction

  • River valley properties have steep driveways — winter moves here are extra challenging
  • Terwillegar Drive expansion (Stage 2 completing 2026, Stage 3 through 2028) causes major detours
  • Terrain is hilly — plan for longer carry distances on sloped lots
  • Newer Terwillegar homes have wide doorways and modern layouts

Sherwood Park

Low

Suburban single-family homes, 1960s split-levels to modern builds

  • Wide streets, attached garages, driveways — among the easiest moves in the region
  • 1960s–70s split-levels have half-flights of stairs throughout the home
  • Account for Sherwood Park Freeway commute time if moving to/from Edmonton
  • Rush hour adds significant time on the Sherwood Park Freeway

St. Albert

Low

Single-family homes across all eras, newer suburbs like Erin Ridge

  • Straightforward suburban moves — very few high-rises
  • Older core neighbourhoods (Grandin, Braeside) have tighter streets and character homes
  • St. Albert Trail rush hour traffic adds time for moves to/from Edmonton
  • Newer areas like Erin Ridge North have wide doorways and easy access

Windermere / Heritage Valley

Low

Modern single-family, townhomes, some with triple garages

  • Newest construction in Edmonton — wide doors, clean driveways, no surprises
  • Still-developing areas may have temporary road closures or unpaved streets
  • About 30 minutes from downtown — factor in drive time for movers
  • Some laned homes require navigating the back alley for garage access

Best days to move in Edmonton: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are the least expensive and easiest to schedule. Better elevator access in high-rises, fewer conflicts with other tenants, and lower hourly rates. Mid-month dates have significantly lower demand than beginning or end of month.
