Edmonton Moving Rules You Need to Know

Parking bylaws, noise restrictions, winter parking bans, and condo rules — here is the quick reference.

When Can You Move? (Noise Bylaw 14600)

DayEarliest StartLatest End
Monday–Saturday7:00 a.m.9:00 p.m.
Sundays & Holidays9:00 a.m.7:00 p.m.

Moving Truck Parking (Traffic Bylaw 5590)

  • Trucks over 4,500 kg or 12.5 metres cannot park on residential streets — except while actively loading/unloading with hazard lights on. This is the exception that makes moving day legal.
  • No vehicle can park in one spot for more than 72 hours continuously.
  • Parking on your front lawn is prohibited under Zoning Bylaw 20001, Section 5.80(2.1.6).
  • Commercial parking permits ($60 + GST for 2 years) allow use of loading zones. Trucks over 4,500 kg don't need one — they can use loading zones by default.

Winter Parking Bans (Critical for Winter Moves)

Edmonton operates a two-phase parking ban system after heavy snowfall. If a ban is declared on your moving day, your truck may not be able to park on your street.

  • Phase 1 (Major roads): Declared with 8 hours notice. Affects arterial roads, bus routes, and business improvement areas. Lasts 3–4 days. Fine: $250.
  • Phase 2 (Residential): 24 hours advance notice via yellow signs. Individual neighbourhoods affected for ~72 hours.
