From Truck Driver to Driving Sales: Staff Spotlight on Warren Angus

Sometimes life can throw you a curveball and sometimes that curveball turns out to be a blessing. In the case of Warren Angus, a chance interview with Two Small Men turned into a career that lasted years.*

Warren spent his childhood in England before his family moved to Okotoks, Alberta. After moving back and forth from the area and eventually starting a family of his own, he found himself in need of employment.

"I just needed a job at the time, and I thought it would be a good opportunity to learn a few things for my next move," he recalls. "I remember showing up for an interview and being put to work that day and never looking back."

Warren started off as a mover and truck driver, the way a lot of people start with the company. But then it really started to stick with him.

"I quickly fell in love with the job of moving," he says. "Meeting different people every day and being a significant part of somebody's journey is such a huge piece of somebody's life that it felt special. I also loved working with a buddy, and getting paid to do cardio was awesome, so I stuck it out."

When the Two Small Men Calgary branch needed a new dispatch manager, Warren answered the call.

"I'm always eager to learn, so I took it," he says. "I sort of regretted trading the boots-on-the-ground work for an office position. But it was nice to spend more time interacting with customers and getting to know their stories."

Over the years, Warren worked in various positions for Two Small Men before eventually assuming the role of Director of Sales. What stayed consistent was his commitment to customer service.

"I really do care about helping people have a stress-free move. It sounds so cliché, but we're not just moving people's things. We're often moving their history. People live in their homes for 20, 30 years. Moving is daunting. It feels good to help them in that time of need, and give them the information they need to feel at ease."

And of course, some moves have been more memorable than others.

"It started as a beautiful day," he recalls. "We loaded up the truck and drove 40 minutes to the destination. Then the skies opened up. Torrential rain. We had to get creative, draping moving blankets from the roof of the truck to the house to give ourselves some shelter. It was a big, grand, rainy experience."

Warren is also enthusiastic when it comes to Two Small Men's commitment to giving back.

"I love reading the stories about our community involvement," he says. "The one that stands out most to me is the Teddy Bear Toss, done in partnership with the Calgary Hitmen. My son was in the hospital when he was born, and they gave teddy bears to the kids on Valentine's Day. I know that bear came from one of those events. So it's really special to me, being on both the receiving and giving end."
