Lyndsy Richard came to the Two Small Men team not because she was looking for an extended career in the moving industry, but mostly because she needed work at the time. Even though she had short term goals at first, it would turn into long-term opportunity.

A local Calgarian, Lyndsy trained to become a nurse but then pivoted towards a 15-year career in food and beverage management for the Calgary Flames. The pandemic shook things up for Lyndsy and when the dust settled, she found herself at Two Small Men.

“I started out in the office two days a week just helping with confirmation calls,” she says. “Then I was offered the assistant dispatch manager position and did training in the Two Small Men Edmonton location. When the manager here went on leave, I stepped in as dispatch manager on a trial basis. After six months, they told me the position was mine.”

As manager of the Calgary branch, Lyndsy needs to cover a lot of ground. Some her responsibilities include “dispatching the crews, making sure we’re following hours of service and safety procedures, dealing with customers, and handling any issues that arise.

“It’s about trying to get ahead of potential problems and setting everyone up for success.”

And no matter what the task is, safety is always front of mind.

“None of my drivers go out without proper training. They’re trained on hours of service, on the trucks, and we use electronic logging religiously. I’ll even check trucks myself, making sure pre-trips are done, fluids are topped up. I want to know things are right before they’re on the road.”

She's no stranger to hands-on work either. Lyndsy has gotten behind the wheel of the trucks many a time to shuttle them to mechanics and she's even helped out on a few moves.

“The job’s not easy by any means. Seeing firsthand what the drivers deal with — access challenges, customers’ expectations, the physical work — it gives me a better appreciation and helps me be a stronger manager. It makes me ask better questions and do better confirmation calls to set the team up for success.”

When it comes to giving back to the community, Lyndsy is proud of the work that her team has done for causes such as the Calgary Hitmen’s Teddy Bear Toss.

“We provided trucks and services for three years in a row. Having worked for the Flames for so long, it was amazing to be back in that building, but in a different role, helping out in the community.”

Lyndsy ultimately credits the spirit of togetherness at Two Small Men Calgary for much of the success they've had.

“Everyone’s team-oriented. The communication between sales, after-service, and dispatch has gotten so much better over the years. Even with big changes like taking on new branches, there’s been so much support across the company. It makes a difference."
