A behind-the-scenes look at how Matthew supports customers and keeps our Toronto moving team running smoothly.
Meet Matthew, the steady problem solver behind Two Small Men’s Toronto branch. Running a moving branch in a city as demanding as Toronto requires someone calm under pressure, adaptable, and ready to handle whatever the day brings. For this location, that person is Matthew, the branch’s head bunch manager. As he puts it plainly, “I’ll dispatch you.”
Matthew’s role focuses on handling whatever issues arise throughout the day. When asked what his daily routine looks like, he answered, “To deal with problems. People like movers have issues; it’s just basically dealing with problems. That’s all I do.” Despite the simplicity of his explanation, the Toronto branch has a lot happening behind the scenes. The team size changes with the seasons and can be “anywhere between two in the winter and ten in the summer,” all operating with just one truck. During slower months the branch runs lean and efficient, while the busy season ramps up quickly. Matthew guides the entire operation through those shifts.

Part of what shapes Matthew’s work style is his international background. Before joining Two Small Men, he lived in the United States and New Zealand. “I was in the States,” he said, mentioning Austin, Texas and Denver, Colorado. Before that he lived in New Zealand, and when asked where he is originally from, he replied, “English.” His decision to come to Canada was personal. “None of my family's in Canada, so I just came here.” Before entering the moving industry, he worked a variety of jobs. “All sorts. I found a little bit of masonry, just all different, random jobs.”
His introduction to Two Small Men was simple. “Just on Facebook.” He had not worked in moving before, though he had helped with “a few odd jobs.” Even now, while he manages the branch, he still goes hands-on when needed. “Yeah, sometimes I go on moves,” he said, and he still drives the truck “occasionally.” For long-distance jobs, the Toronto branch relies on container transport. “If it’s long haul, we put it in a storage container and then drop it off at the yard and someone else sorts it out.”
Most of the work is residential and almost all of it is local. Matthew describes it in his straightforward way. “I don’t think it’s a very exciting job or anything like that. It’s just like a move. You go to a customer’s house, you pick up the stuff, and drop it off.”
He manages the staff as well, including one mover named Greg. His management style is simple and practical. “If it’s something small, like a parking issue, they can generally figure out how to park the truck.” He does his best not to intervene unless necessary, saying, “Try not to micromanage.” He also ensures safety remains a priority. “There’s a thing called a driver’s evaluation,” he explained. It helps make sure everyone is ready before they get behind the wheel.
Toronto’s environment brings its own challenges for movers. Winter weather is part of the job, but Matthew takes it in stride. “There’s a shovel in the truck. If you have to shovel snow or something like that, it’s not a big issue. Yes, it snows, but I think that’s pretty common in Canada.” He added that it was less common in some of the places he lived previously. “Not so much in the States, but in Canada it snows.” He shrugs off the inconvenience. “I’d rather it doesn’t snow, but if it snows, it snows.”

Traffic is a much greater obstacle. When asked what makes Toronto especially difficult for moving, Matthew answered immediately. It is a constant problem with no real workaround. “You can’t really do anything about it. The traffic’s there.” Even trying to avoid peak periods is not very effective. “You can’t really work around it because you’ve got to go the route.” He pointed out that Toronto traffic is not confined to morning and afternoon rush hours. As he put it, “It’s pretty much traffic all the time.”
Throughout the interview Matthew spoke with modesty and understatement. When told the conversation might not give much to write about, he replied, “If it’s not enough, you don’t have to write anything about it.” But this simplicity is part of what makes him unique. In a city where everything moves quickly, Matthew approaches each day with calm consistency. His global experience, hands-on attitude, and steady leadership provide the foundation for the Toronto branch. Without fanfare or fuss, he helps keep moves on track and clients taken care of, even when the weather is harsh or the traffic heavy.
Matthew’s quiet approach is exactly what makes him invaluable. He may not think the work is exciting, but his dedication ensures that Two Small Men continues to serve Toronto with reliability and care.
