On the other hand, winters in Edmonton are very snowy, with temperatures averaging around -10℃ to -15℃ (but it can get much colder). Summers in Vancouver are warm and dry , with temperatures from 20℃ to 25℃ fluctuating throughout the summer season. Summers there often feel cooler because of the maritime climate. Very similarly, summer in Edmonton also ranges from 20℃ to 25℃ but ends up feeling warmer because of the continental climate.

Another one of the biggest changes that people face when moving from Vancouver to Edmonton is transportation. If you lived in Vancouver for a while, you are probably used to the vast network of public transportation. Vancouver public transit offers the SkyTrain, TransLink Buses, and the SeaBus ferry. Although Edmonton’s public transit is on a much smaller scale, it still includes buses and a light rail system. The car life is much more suitable when travelling around Edmonton. Take advantage of this lifestyle by travelling to one of the many provincial parks outside of Edmonton. The parks have scenic views and breathtaking lakes.

Cost of Living

The cost of living in Vancouver vs Edmonton is drastically different. For starters, Vancouver’s housing market is one of the most expensive in Canada. Buying or renting a house in Vancouver is significantly more expensive than in Edmonton. In Edmonton, you could buy a house twice the size with the same budget.  

Transportation is another huge expense you should consider when moving to Edmonton. On average, gas prices are a lot lower in Edmonton compared to Vancouver. This comes especially in handy since driving a car is the best way to travel around Edmonton. Surprisingly, public transit costs also tend to be lower in Edmonton compared to Vancouver. Your overall monthly transportation expenses will be much lower if you move to Edmonton. 

Grocery prices are another expense you should consider when comparing Vancouver and Edmonton. The average grocery prices in Edmonton are slightly lower than in Vancouver. However, the real difference can be seen when dining out. Restaurants in Vancouver tend to be pricier, especially in areas with lots of tourism. In Edmonton, it is a lot easier to find mid to low-range restaurants that fit your budget.

What Neighborhoods in Edmonton Are Similar to Vancouver?

Oliver

Oliver is a neighbourhood in one of the most densely populated areas of Edmonton. Oliver is very comparable to the West End neighbourhood of Vancouver. Both neighbourhoods are very walkable with lots of green space. Both neighbourhoods are also very close to their respective downtown areas. Although, they are not completely downtown, so you don’t have to deal with the hustle and bustle. Overall, Oliver is a great neighbourhood to live in if you like the walkability and greenery of the West End of Vancouver.  

Downtown Edmonton

Downtown Edmonton is the heart of the city, that’s why we believe it is so similar to downtown Vancouver. Downtown Edmonton is home to many of the city’s major events and even hosts the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place. Similarly, downtown Vancouver hosts the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena. If you are a hockey fan, the downtown areas are definitely where you want to be. Overall, if you enjoy the entertainment and nightlife of downtown Vancouver, you will definitely enjoy downtown Edmonton.

Garneau is a neighbourhood in Edmonton that is known for its vibrant student life because of its proximity to the University of Alberta. We believe Garneau is most comparable to Kitsilano, Vancouver. Kitsilano is a neighbourhood very close to the University of British Columbia. Garneau and Kitsilano are both filled with historic charm and green space. Both neighbourhoods are also very walkable with lots of relaxing cafes. Overall, if you enjoy the academic life in Kitsilano, you will enjoy Garneau.
