The Long-Haul Leader of Saskatoon: Two Small Men Staff Spotlight on Landon Woodrow

Careers

Saskatoon Assistant Dispatcher and Long Haul Driver Landon Woodrow shares how he found purpose, teamwork, and adventure on the road with Two Small Men with Big Hearts.

When Landon Woodrow first started driving for Two Small Men with Big Hearts in Saskatoon, he had never been behind the wheel of anything larger than a small sports car. Three and a half years later, he is one of the branch’s most trusted team members, balancing his work as an Assistant Dispatcher and Long Haul Driver with a calm, safety-first attitude that perfectly reflects the company’s values.

Before joining the team, Landon spent nearly seven years as a shipper and receiver for Loblaw. The job gave him plenty of experience organizing and communicating with customers, but after years of night shifts, he was ready for a new challenge. That challenge appeared unexpectedly one day when he met Eric, now his branch manager. “I was having a really bad week at my last job,” Landon recalls. “I went to talk to someone we both knew, and Eric overheard me. He walked into his house, came back five minutes later with a hiring package and said, ‘Fill this out. You work for me now.’”

After recovering from a minor hand surgery, Landon joined Two Small Men with Big Hearts Saskatoon as a driver focusing on local residential moves. Like many new movers in Saskatoon, he found the transition to truck driving a steep learning curve. “I’d never driven anything bigger than a small sports car before this,” he says with a laugh. “It was a massive change.” Determined to master the skill, he practiced wherever he could, driving a friend’s half-ton truck and even renting a U-Haul for a day just to build confidence. “Like any mover, I struggled a bit in the beginning,” he admits. “But with time, patience, and support from my coworkers, I was able to improve and really enjoy what I do now.”

That perseverance carried him through some challenging jobs early on. One of the toughest came during his first few months when the Saskatoon branch was short-staffed. “Eric had COVID at the time, so Calvin and I had to figure everything out ourselves,” he says. “I ended up with the smallest truck and a crew that didn’t really mesh. One guy quit halfway through, and the other and I weren’t getting along. It turned into a two-day job.”

After the experience, he thought about quitting, but his mentors stepped in. “Eric and Calvin pulled me aside and said, ‘Hey man, this happens. It’s not your fault.’ That kept me going,” he says. “Three years later, I’m still here.”

Today, Landon’s favorite part of the job is long-distance moving, the kind of work that takes him across the country and lets him see new places. “I love traveling and seeing the country,” he says. “If there was an opportunity to do long hauls full time, I’d jump on it.” His longest trip so far took him to Victoria and Duncan, B.C., a journey that spanned ten days and several moves. Those long trips come with their own challenges. “Time pressure becomes a big factor,” he explains. “We’re limited to 13 hours of driving a day and 70 hours a week, so you’ve got to manage your hours carefully and sometimes take a reset day between cities. You have to be very conscientious of time.”

When he is not on the highway, Landon helps coordinate daily operations at the Saskatoon branch. As Assistant Dispatcher, he steps in for his manager when needed, handles confirmation calls and payroll, and supports both the team and customers. “If there’s an issue with a truck, I’ll work with Jason from operations to figure it out,” he says. “We’re a team that helps each other whenever we can.”

That team spirit is what Landon values most about working at Two Small Men with Big Hearts, one of Western Canada’s leading professional moving companies. “What I really love about the Saskatoon branch is how close-knit we are. It’s like a family,” he says. “Calvin trained me when I started, and now I’m the godfather of his son. The work can be hard, but when you’re doing it with people who have your back, there’s a level of accomplishment and satisfaction you just can’t find anywhere else.”

Looking ahead, Landon plans to continue building his career with the company, whether on the road or behind the dispatch desk. “I naturally go the extra mile to make sure everything’s okay and the customer’s happy,” he says. “That’s just part of who we are here, and that’s why I love being part of this team.”
