We're back with another City Spotlight! In November, we're highlighting another fantastic city where Two Small Men has an office and many of our team members live and work. This month, we're taking you to the vibrant capital of Manitoba. Keep reading to discover why Winnipeggers love their city.

Unlike some larger cities, you might not hear as much about Manitoba's capital. But don't be fooled—Winnipeg is a hidden gem with a ton to offer. We think you'll be pleasantly surprised by all the activities waiting for you once you get settled in.

All About Winnipeg

Winnipeg, nestled where the Red and Assiniboine Rivers meet, is Manitoba’s capital city. It's located just 110 km from the Canada-US border, making it a southern hotspot.

Known as the "Gateway to the West," Winnipeg's strategic location has given it one of Canada’s most diversified economies. With a population of 705,244 as of the 2016 census, it’s Canada’s 7th largest city. Fun fact: Winnipeg houses more than 50% of Manitoba’s population, the highest concentration in any province!

What's the History?

Winnipeg gets its name from nearby Lake Winnipeg. The name comes from the Western Cree words for Muddy Water. This area was a bustling trade hub for First Nations people due to its proximity to two major rivers.

With the arrival of Europeans, both the North West Company and the Hudson's Bay Company set up forts here. Winnipeg truly began to flourish with the railway’s arrival in 1881, cementing its role as a "gateway" city.

Things to Do in Winnipeg

If you're planning to move to Winnipeg, you're probably wondering about the local attractions. As a local moving company, we've discovered plenty of fun things to do in this lively city. Here are some of our favourites:

Arts and Culture

Winnipeg is a cultural haven. Visit the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the first museum dedicated to the evolution, crisis, and future of human rights worldwide.

Don’t miss the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Many notable dancers have trained and performed here, and the current company tours globally. Catching a performance in their hometown is a special treat. Fun Fact: The Royal Winnipeg Ballet is the first ballet company to receive the royal title from Queen Elizabeth II.

Explore The Forks National Historic Site, one of the city’s most visited attractions, featuring museums, boutiques, and a bustling marketplace.

Sports

Sports enthusiasts can cheer for the Blue Bombers football team and the Winnipeg Jets hockey team, who returned to the city from Phoenix in 2011. There are also university sports teams to support and plenty of opportunities for you to get active.

Just for Fun

The Assiniboine Park and Zoo is open year-round. If you're moving to Winnipeg this winter, it’s a great spot to visit. Another unique winter activity is dining at the Raw Almond pop-up restaurant, located right on the frozen river from January to February.

In the summer, check out Manyfest on Broadway, offering free admission. Kids will love the Manitoba Children's Museum with its fun and educational activities.
