The number one question we get from people looking to move is “How much do movers cost?” While we wish there was a one-size-fits-all answer, the truth is that moving costs vary widely. To help you get a better idea, here are five key factors that affect the final cost of hiring a moving company:
1. The Move Distance and/or Time
The distance you're moving and the time it takes are major factors. Long-distance moves are typically more expensive than local ones. For local moves, the time your movers spend is crucial; the farther and longer your move, the higher the cost.
2. How Much Stuff You Have
The more you have, the longer it takes to move, especially for local moves charged by the hour. Decluttering before you move can save you time and money by reducing the number of items your movers need to handle.
3. When You’re Moving
When you move can significantly impact the cost. Moving during peak times—like the beginning or end of the month, or during summer—can be more expensive due to high demand. When you choose to move with us, you can save up to $30 per hour by moving between the 4th and the 24th of the month. Seasons can also have an impact as certain times of year are much busier than others.
4. The Accuracy of Your Inventory
Getting a free moving estimate is the best way to determine what your move is going to cost. It’s important to us, and to you, to make sure your estimate is as accurate as possible to your final moving cost. But, without an accurate inventory of your things, this can’t happen.
Some people believe that under-representing the size of their inventory will mean a lower estimate and a lower cost. But, an estimate is just an estimate, and if you end up having more things than initially thought, your move can take longer than estimated and your cost will go up.
5. Extra Services
Whether or not you have additional moving services is a big factor in determining how much a moving company costs. Things like packing and unpacking services, vehicle transport, and more will add to the cost of your move. Plus, things like additional movers or another truck can also have added costs.
Like we said above, getting a free moving estimate is the best way to determine how much your move will cost. Make sure to indicate whether any of these factors apply when getting your estimate in order to ensure it’s accurate.
