Bringing Empathy, Organization, and a Lifetime of Experience to Every Move

When Cheryl L. joined Two Small Men with Big Hearts as a Move Coordinator in Calgary, she brought more than just customer service experience with her. She brought a lifetime of helping people navigate change.

Originally from British Columbia's Fraser Valley, Cheryl has spent much of her career working in social services, supporting people through difficult and often stressful circumstances. Today, she's applying many of those same skills to helping customers coordinate one of life's biggest transitions: moving.

"The job position is taking the stress off customers and helping them coordinate their move," Cheryl says.

Although she's only been with the company for a short time, the role feels like a natural fit. Before joining the team, Cheryl had already experienced the company from the customer side.

"I used them twice, actually," she says. "They had a really good price and they were available, but they were also more thorough than anybody else. They actually asked me everything. What do you have? How big is this? It was more detailed."

Those positive experiences left an impression, and now Cheryl is helping provide that same level of care to others.

Her background in social work has proven especially valuable. Working in communities throughout British Columbia taught her how to listen carefully, prioritize people's needs, and recognize the stress related to their move they may be carrying before they even say it out loud.

"The ability to understand people's stress and prioritize" is one of the biggest skills she has brought into the role, she explains.

Every move is different. Some customers simply want their belongings moved from one place to another, while others have treasured possessions that require extra attention. Cheryl's approach is to identify what's most important to each person and build the move around those priorities.

"Find out what's important to the customer," she says. "Get your necessary information and find out what's most important."

Because she has personally been through multiple moves herself, she often finds common ground with customers who are feeling overwhelmed.

"The fact that I've been in their shoes and moving, you know, their circumstances. Quite often are relatable circumstances."

That ability to connect with people helps create calmer conversations and smoother moving experiences.

Outside of work, Cheryl has another passion that has shaped much of her life: music.

A music teacher for nearly two decades, Cheryl teaches guitar and piano and previously taught in the Chilliwack school district. Music runs deep in her family. Her brothers are active musicians, and all three of her children play instruments as well.

"I taught them," she says proudly.

In fact, Cheryl can play an impressive range of instruments herself, including violin, viola, mandolin, bass, banjo, guitar, and piano.

The connection between teaching music and coordinating moves may not seem obvious at first, but Cheryl sees many similarities.

"I find a lot of stress relief in music," she says. "I find it very satisfying to help somebody organize something and learn something or coordinate something."

Then she laughs and sums herself up perfectly:

"I'm an organizer and a to-do lady."

Those qualities have served her well throughout her career and continue to help customers every day as they plan their moves.

As Cheryl settles into life in Calgary and prepares to bring the rest of her belongings from British Columbia, she's looking forward to building both her career with Two Small Men and eventually restarting her private music lessons.

For now, she's focused on what she does best: helping people through important life transitions with empathy, organization, and a calm voice on the other end of the phone.

For customers navigating the stress of moving, that's exactly the kind of person you want in your corner.
