Staff Spotlight on Matthew from Toronto

Matthew is one of Two Small Men's best employees and he's the head manager of the of Toronto team. When you're coordinating moves in a city this big and busy, you need to be calm, cool and collected and Matthew has all those qualities in spades.

Every day presents new challenges and new ways to solve them. He's required to not only coordinate moves but the schedules of his employees as well.

"People, like movers, have issues; it’s just basically dealing with problems," he says. "That’s all I do.”

Despite this straightforward explanation, the Toronto branch is surprisingly complex.

"The team size changes with the seasons and can be anywhere between two in the winter and ten in the summer,” he says.

And all moves need to happen with the one truck they have available.

Somewhat of a globetrotter, Matthew's life before joining Two Small Men saw him hopping from one global destination to another. He lived for extended periods in New Zealand and the U.S. in states including Texas and Colorado. But it all started in England where he's from originally and where he still has family.

“None of my family's in Canada, so I just came here.”

He worked many different jobs before finding his calling at Two Small Men.

“All sorts. I found a little bit of masonry, just all different, random jobs.”

He eventually discovered Two Small Men through Facebook. Although he goes on less jobs than he did when he started, he's still no stranger to the truck, especially when it comes to long-distance moves.

“Yeah, sometimes I go on moves,” he says. “If it’s long haul, we put it in a storage container and then drop it off at the yard and someone else sorts it out.”

Hardly the most excitable man in the world, Matthew is pragmatic when it comes to describing his work.

“I don’t think it’s a very exciting job or anything like that. It’s just like a move. You go to a customer’s house, you pick up the stuff, and drop it off.”

His management style is similarly simple and bereft of flash. But it works. Above all else, he says he tries not micromanage.

“If it’s something small, like a parking issue, they can generally figure out how to park the truck.”

He also ensures safety remains a priority. “There’s a thing called a driver’s evaluation,” he explained. "It helps make sure everyone is ready before they get behind the wheel."

While moves are more difficult in the winter, Matthew and the expert team in Toronto still work through it with quiet and steadfast resolve.

“There’s a shovel in the truck," he says. "If you have to shovel snow or something like that, it’s not a big issue. Yes, it snows, but I think that’s pretty common in Canada. I’d rather it doesn’t snow, but if it snows, it snows.”
