Canadian winters can be rough and unpredictable. Most people try to avoid moving in the winter, but sometimes you can’t choose when you have to move. So what do you do if your move falls on a day when the weather is, to put it bluntly, lousy? At Two Small Men with Big Hearts, we understand the challenges of winter moves and are here to help you navigate through them safely and efficiently.
Moving in Bad Weather: Tips and Considerations
Prioritize Safety During Winter Moves
Safety is our number one concern during winter moves. We want our movers, as well as you and your family, to stay safe throughout the process. Extremely cold weather can be hazardous, leading to icy conditions and poor visibility. The last thing we want is for anyone to get injured during the move.
Ensure Cleanliness Amidst the Snow
Another major concern is keeping everything clean. Snow is wet and dirty, and we are committed to ensuring that your new and old homes, as well as your belongings, remain clean and dry.
Best Tips for Moving in Bad Weather
Clear Walkways
Start by clearing off your sidewalks and walkways. Snow on the sidewalk is a slip or trip hazard for both you and our movers, and it can significantly slow down the moving process.
Salt Walkways for Better Footing
If the sidewalks are icy, it’s a major hazard. Ice can be hard to see when carrying large, heavy furniture. Salting any sidewalks that the movers or you and your family will use frequently helps keep everyone safe and ensures the moving process isn’t delayed.
Provide Warm Places for Breaks
Winter weather can be dangerously cold. While our movers are equipped with jackets, gloves, and hats, the cold can still affect them, especially when they’re working hard. We ask you to provide warm places where our movers can take quick breaks or have lunch. Unlike in the summer, it’s much safer for them to eat indoors during the winter.
Keep an Eye Out for Water Drops
Besides safety, keeping everything clean and dry is a top concern during winter moves. We do our best to avoid bringing in snow or dirt with our shoes, but occasionally something gets missed. We ask that you keep an eye out for any water drops in your new or old home so we can towel everything dry before we leave. Laying down old towels or blankets in areas where movers will frequently walk, like the entryways, greatly helps keep your home clean.
