Have you recently bought a new home or signed a lease for a new apartment? Perhaps you’ve invested in a beautiful piece of art or furniture. As you prepare for your move, you might be tempted to skip professional moving services to save money. But can you guarantee that you’ll move those expensive items securely on your own?

If you want to make your move more affordable while ensuring the safety of your belongings, there are several strategies to save money. The key is to make your move less time-consuming and hassle-free, as reducing the time movers spend on your job can significantly cut costs.

Here are 12 ways to save money on your move and make them less time-consuming:

1. Move on a random weekday

Avoid moving at the end or beginning of the month, as these are the busiest times for moving companies. When demand is lower, you’ll get better rates. If your schedule is flexible, call moving companies and get quotes for different days of the month. Summer is also a peak season, so consider moving during off-peak times. With Two Small Men, flexible scheduling can lead to significant discounts (up to $30 per hour).

2. Prepare for Your Move

The best way to save money on your move is by being as prepared as possible. If you are organized and have your home clean and ready with all your items packed before movers can pick your stuff, obviously the move will be less time-consuming. As a result, less pricey!

3. Efficient Packing

If you have opted for our packing service, small things can prompt packing and make it hassle-free. For instance, consider bringing items out of cabinets, make sure your dishwasher is empty, and be sure to check hutches, and desks!

4. Get creative with packing

If you are doing the packing yourself, get little creative! Load up your suitcases, laundry hampers, baskets and coolers rather than buying boxes and bins for everything. Also, try using your towels to pad the breakables instead of using the rolls of bubble wraps.

5. Skip the Yard Sale

We know there is no sense in moving unwanted items, but it takes a lot more effort to host a garage sale. Instead, be more digital! Click some pictures and post the things on Facebook Marketplace or Kijiji with detailed descriptions. Most buyers are willing to come and pick up the items that align with your schedule.

6. Clear out any obstacles

Make your move safer by clearing out the walkways of ice, snow, or any other obstructions. This will make it easier for the movers to use dollies, 4-wheelers, etc., speeding up the process.

7. Centralize Your Items

If you can, try and move your boxes to the garage or common area where the crew can quickly load them up. As the items are more accessible, movers can quickly figure out what things need to be placed first and last according to priority.

8. Give clear directions

Clearly communicate what you want to be moved and where you want items placed at the new location. As Two Small Men movers label every box, let them know where each box should go.

9. Get ahead with Disassembling/Assembling

Our movers at Two Small Men are happy to provide any disassembly and re-assembly for your furniture. However, if you can get ahead with disassembly before the move or assemble of the bed frames, furniture after moving this could save a lot of time, and cost you less.

10. LOAD smaller items in your Vehicle:

If you are able to move smaller, awkward things, lamps, knick-knacks, loose boxes or any fragile or valuable items sealed correctly in your own vehicle it will be easier for the crew to load the truck and quickly transport it to your new place, without worrying about damage.

11. Reserve Parking Spots Beforehand:

If you are in an apartment, condo, or shared a home, try and reserve parking spots so the trucks can get as close to the building as possible. If you can access the truck better, the more efficient the crew will be.

12. Book the Elevator or Reserve the spot:

If you are living in an apartment, book off or reserve the elevator ahead of time. If you don’t have a lift, try and reserve a mid-week, or mid-month spot for your move because at that point the building won’t have as much foot traffic for the movers to be working around.
